Assembly hall ceiling tiles are now all installed. Some will be removed when lighting is placed in the ceiling. The mixture of used and new tiles looks like we designed it that way! The refinishing of the kitchen floor started on Tuesday and will be complete on Friday with the 2nd coat of polyurethane. What a contrast between the un-refinished floor and the newly done floor in the kitchen! Volunteers came aplenty early in the week to caulk, prime, scrape, and paint. Rosalie and James P., Bruce P., Jeanne D., Jim, David T., Al W., Richard D., Will R. Much accomplished - thanks to all.

Weeks 19 and 20     October 10 - October 23:

Volunteers painted the new bathroom and the assembly hall walls. (Photos unavailable at press time!) They look beautiful. Thanks to Kathy for organizing and leading this huge effort. While Al continues to install trim around all the doorways, Richard is caulking, patching, painting, installing doorknobs, and a host of other tasks. Will Ross is giving the stucco a daily wetting as it cures. This will go on for four weeks. The bathrooms got floor tile and the ceiling grid is complete and ready for tiles. The new kitchen cabinets arrived and Al & Shelley will install them. Bruce P. has completed patching the stucco on the south wall of the old building in preparation for painting.

Week 18     October 3 - October 9:

Drywall taping, plastering and texturing being done in new building. Volunteers continue work drywalling old bathroom and taping drywall in back bedroom & bathroom. Stucco work began on exterior of new building, brown coat applied.

Week 17     September 26 - October 2:

Volunteer John Sadowsky installed exhaust fan in old bathroom; volunteers Richard, Leo, Steve & John installed drywall in back bedroom & old bathroom; volunteer Al installed trim around bathroom window & doorways and hung hallway drywall. Drywall installation in assembly hall and new bathroom ongoing. Digging of power line trench completed on October 2.

Week 16     September 19 - September 25:

Volunteers Richard & Shelley continued work in the old house reconnecting & routing HVAC return, installing phone wire; Richard installied new door in back bedroom; Al began staining patio wood sections. Ceiling and wall insulation installation completed in new portion & old buildings. Planing & shimming for pre-drywall wall installation complete. Kitchen subfloor built, exposed adobe around window got first coat of stucco. Drywall installation began in the assembly hall.

Weeks 14 and 15     September 5 - September 18:

Volunteers Al & Richard continued work in the old house adding trim to doors and windows; patching holes in the walls and floors. Richard even enlisted his sister's help while she was visiting from California. Fire sprinkler installation finally completed and inspection will be done next week. The new fire system riser is almost a work of art and very large. The insulation installer began putting up the wires that form the support for the ceiling insulation.

Weeks 12 and 13     August 22 - September 4:

Rough-ins for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and fire suppression are ongoing. Volunteers are working with the electrician to ensure proper placement of lighting connections and sufficient outlets. Passed building rough-in inspection for electrical, plumbing and HVAC September 2.

Weeks 10 and 11     August 8 - August 21:

The building passed the strap and shear inspection on August 10. Roofing installation began shortly after that and was completed August 16. Inside the building, volunteers continued work on the old bathroom adobe wall adding a layer of stucco. The boarded up windows and doorway plus the filled in spaces above the new windows were all prepped for stucco. The new building was lathed in preparation for stucco. Note the before and after photos of the front and back of the building from June 13 to now.

Week 9     August 1 - August 7:

Framing continues and the roof sheathing was installed Tuesday and Wednesday. Volunteers removed windows and repaired window frames in the old house in preparation for new low-e windows. The trap door to gain access under the water heater was built this week. Roofline decorative facades were added to match the roofline of the original house.

Week 8     July 25 - July 31:

Trusses arrived on the 29th and work began again; volunteers spent the week removing old bathroom drywall and prepping doorway for new door in the southwest room; prior to installing middle trusses the damaged adobe wall on east side had to be replaced with new wall; doorways in old house had to be widened to accommodate wheelchair access.

Week 7     July 18 - July 24:

Framing continues in the assembly hall and patio areas. External wall sheathing is installed; and new doorways created. Footers for the trash can barrier wall have been readied for the concrete pour. The patio roof is framed and sheathed.

Week 6     July 11 - July 17:

Volunteers work on replacing an old door and windows in the southwest room; and installing bracing under the water heater. The walls for the assembly hall, new restroom, and patio are raised and external wall sheathing is installed.

Week 5     July 4 - July 10:

Preparation work begins. The existing walls are not 'true' so the framer tries several starting points for marking off the framing outline for the walls; rough framing begins.

Week 4     June 27 - July 3:

New restroom, patio and assembly hall are beginning to take shape. The concrete pads are complete. The construction crew is working in 110 - 112 degree humid weather and deserve a few days off while the concrete cures. We are ahead of schedule at this point.

Weeks 2 and 3     June 13 - June 26:

New restroom and patio area staked out and ground leveled; trenches dug; underground plumbing laid, and forms set in preparation for pouring concrete footers. Volunteer Henry Geist completed water heater piping installation underneath the house and into the new water heater location.

Week 1     June 6 - June 12:

The entire east wall and the old garage door wall have been removed as has the roof over that area; this will become our assembly hall, a.k.a Great Room
